Sara Maitland: Stations of the Cross
Sara Maitland: Stations of the Cross
Chris Gollon, the international artist, was commissioned to paint site specific Stations of the Cross for St John on Bethnal Green, an Anglican parish church in London’s East End. Sara was deeply moved both by the courage of the parish in committing itself to such a major adventure and by the paintings themselves, which seem to her to use an ancient tradition to create a startlingly contemporary meditation on the passion of Jesus. She wanted, as a writer to respond to this work and has written 14 new short stories, which, with the pictures, are being published for Lent 2009. The stories, like the paintings, focus on the full humanity of Jesus and are told – some of them in the first person – from the point of view of the various characters (biblical and traditional) including Jesus himself who were involved in the Crucifixion.
